BEACH FIT IS BACK

Beach Fit returns for its 2nd summer season on Weymouth beach. This unique sports initiative delivers expertly coached athletics in a fun and entertaining manner. In 2006 it was a big hit with its target audience of 5 to 14 year old children with over 1200 kids participating. Its organisers are hoping to raise that figure to 1500 this year.

Already over 750 local year 4 school children have been visited in their schools by the Beach Fit coaches and given a free taster sessions. The talented athletes discovered at these sessions came together on the beach in an inter-schools competition, The Beach Fit Challenge, and were filmed by BBC television. As a further incentive to get children active during the summer holidays Beach Fit have distributed 1000 free-go vouchers to Weymouth and Portland schools.

Beach Fit creator and head coach Layla Hawkins a former junior South of England heptathlon champion says, “I was lucky enough to be trained by Olympic coaches and I will be passing on my skills and knowledge to the youngsters It is not just for those who know they are good at sport, many novices find they have hidden talent and are inspired to go home and join teams and clubs”

Coaching covers sprints, hurdles, javelin, shot, discus, standing long jump and triple jump with obstacle relays to improve speed, quickness and agility.

Beach Fit will run everyday from Sat 4 Aug to Sat 1 Sept with 45 min sessions at 11am, 12am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm costing £4 with a maximum of 6 children per coach. Located next to the sand modeller.

Digging For 2012 on Weymouth Beach

After the UK team’s disappointing medals haul in the European Athletics Championships Beach Fit is playing its part in trying to change British fortunes in the future by providing top athletics coaching for 5 to 14 year olds on Weymouth beach this summer.
Already over 600 children have visited the Beach Fit site and received expert tuition in javelin. shot, discus, long jump, triple jump, hurdles and sprints. These disciplines are coupled with fun obstacle relays which improve speed, agility and quickness.
With a maximum ratio or 6 kids per coach children are getting the level of attention usually only received by athletes in elite squads.
Beach Fit runs 7 days/week from 11am to 4 pm with 45 minute sessions starting every hour on the hour and costing £4, until 2 September.
Head coach and creator of Beach Fit Layla Hawkins (19) says
“ Many children taking part in our sessions are receiving their first ever proper athletics coaching and surprise themselves by how good they can get in the various disciplines with just some basic technique tuition and encouragement. Most kids are so hooked after just one session that they come back several times to develop their skills and improve their Personal Bests which we track for them. We have uncovered some really promising athletes who we hope will go on and star for the GB team in 2012 and beyond”
